The provisions of the new TOY SAFETY DIRECTIVE enter into force on 21 July 2011.

Directive 2009/48/EC  replaces the existing Toy Safety Directive (Dir 88/378/EEC) and adds a number of additions to the regulatory system which collectively result in stricter rules requiring more detailed compliance.

Importers of toys (now subject to an enlarged definition) must take steps to monitor compliance with requirements including chemical and electrical components, general product safety as well as specific labeling requirements.  All of the above much be demonstrated in a self certified EC declaration of Conformity and use of the CE mark.

The new provisions  will likely lead to a surge in enforcement activity dealing with the new provisions in the coming months.
